YIPPEE Volume 32
April 2007

April Showers Bring...

MORE Winter!

Cold and white, those showers of April
Piling high and so much to shovel
Snowstorms kept YIPPEE in winter

Chris couldn't get home that one night
Po-O-Cham too snow-filled and deep
The Geo too small
took him back t'other way
In Brattleboro he slept
for the (rest of the) night

* SNOW! *
Shovel, shovel, shovel
(but no plowing; the Vermoose remains stuck)
* SNOW! *
Hearts of various shapes and sizes
* SNOW! *
Snowshoes kept active
* SNOW! *

Have YOU ever tried installing a toilet in the snow?
Or, put up a tarp during snowy, sleety, icy precipitation?
GIPPEE's only partially installed, amidst nasty conditions, thanks to the winter weather.

' RAIN! '
Showers turn warmer and wetter, immediately after laying down a foot of snow
' RAIN! '
Showers: loud, rushing and gushing
' RAIN! '
Over and through the snow filled area,
making mush of C+C's plans
' RAIN! '

Gully of washout, crossing Baker Brook Road
Chris turns around: he's back for the day
Fixing the culvert on YIPPEE driveway

SHOWERS and the Unlucky Weekend:

Friday the 13th started off with Chris waking up in that Brattleboro hotel room, and not snuggled up next to his love, as things should be on Friday mornings! Later on, after falling on his bum while shoveling Park Ave, he proclaimed, "This day is not happening" and returned to the little yurt to tell Cass. Normal Friday tasks were switched to Saturday, and onsite work was done that day instead. The weekend's main goal was preparation for visitors, and C+C valiantly attempted to do this during the heavy snowstorm, all the while unsure of how the heck the visit would work out in several feet of snow. The coop shopping made Cassandra really sick again, and that took coordination and had to be dealt with promptly, and the new woodstove elbows, installed after routine stove cleaning, reeked horribly, and the snow turned to rain, and everything was a supreme mess. Chris had to use a vacation day on Monday to save the driveway, and C+C got drenched and cold, working in the continual downpour. And then there was a technological shower of ... problems... as the site journal file crashed, then one Palm crashed, and then, on Tuesday, another Palm crashed. Spirits were very low. A song was created.

Multiple feet of snow gone in a day!

SHOWERS of Guests: no rain or snow involved

C+C welcomed Ken for his second visit to YIPPEE-Land; this time introducing his wife, Tracy! They showered at Poocham, per usual visitor protocol. A sunny, Summery, warm day replaced the dramatic weather of the past week, luring K+T into staying onsite overnight. Amazingly, they didn't even sleep in the tent; using only sleeping-bags on the 30' yurt floor, on a night when the overnight temp got down to darn near 30 degrees. Wow! Warm breakfast awaited them in the little yurt the next morning and soon enough, it was quite warm outside again. Decidedly not soup weather. A few days prior, providing guests with a warming lunch seemed quite necessary. As it turned out, the day's weather and the morning's physical labors had everyone warm enough. Ken, Tracy and Chris cleared out rotting logs and debris near the site of the future Utility Shed. Cass was bummed to have to work separately, but grateful to avoid the moldiness. A huge pile was moved, and the area looked fantastic afterward. Yippee!

SHOWERS of Trees!

Eight trees fell at the hands of Chris and Ken! Using the oh-so-cool human-powered logging tools that C+C now proudly own, these two took down six trees as planned, another one that was in the way, and one that Ken took down solo, merely by leaning on it and laughing, "I meant to do that!". The next day, Cass got to try out one of the saws, helping Chris take apart one tree that had fallen into an erosion-control ditch.

( MUD! )

C+C's hopes of getting by, without having to fix Woody Walkway until after built and moved, were squished in the gushy mud. Hauling logs and debris downhill made many deep footprints, and a general mess of the area, which had not been in great condition even before all the snowmelt and rain. Mid-morning, logs and debris were moved to an area behind the boiler instead, and this turned out to be easier anyway. The next week, as the ground dried out somewhat, Cass got to work removing debris, digging and tamping, filling in the damaged areas and reshaping to create a better walkway. Up by the spring, more digging and tamping began repairing washout, and work was started on a new run-off ditch.

SHOWERS:

... did not end up being the reason Cass was isolated with zero phone signal for several days. ZERO signal! Yikes! A broken antenna turned out to be the culprit instead.

SHOW! ER...
Magrat the mountain moose showed up!

In early April, Cass reverted back to hiking uphill via the driveway. Since there's no more Vermoose-use (aka plowing) this season, this is safe for her to do again, it is easier than the mushiness of the pipeline path, and usually, the driveway has less appeal to wildlife as a toilet. Usually. The visiting moose had no qualms about dumping her business onto the driveway, right in front of Woodshed#2, with Chris standing nearby uphill. That morning, Cass had spotted moose hoof-prints in the snow and Chris checked out the tracks while down at Park Ave mid-day. In the evening, C+C returned via the pipeline path, hunting moose tracks and chatting until Chris paused, excitedly whispering, "There she is!". Walking carefully through the woods, smiling all the while, he captured her on phone-cam, and eventually ended up over on the driveway where he witnessed the moose's aforementioned waste dump. "Shovel Moose-Poop Pile off Driveway" is not in the project plan but Chris is adaptable and, heck, probably still smiled while shoveling. Later, he took the camera out to follow along as she munched her way through the woods. The next evening, C+C returned from sitework to see and, as they got closer to take pics, hear Magrat dining behind the 14' yurt. How close is close enough to hear a moose munch? Well, at about 10' away, Chris decided he was getting too close. Do Moose snore? The following morning, Cassandra was pretty darn sure moosie was out there snoring.

SHOWERS:

... did NOT prevent all progress, and
scattered warmer days in the latter part of the month allowed some tasks to begin.

Electrical: Walk throughs, feng shui and plan revisions, boxes installed in 20'.

Yurt-to-Yurt Connection: Floor installed, wall frames and ceiling up, wall boards started. Rain prevented finishing by month's end: perhaps only fitting since every yurt raising (and this was kind of similar) has taken place with precipitation problems!

Walls - 20' yurt: More framing including plumbing, bracing, cutting, nailing, bolting, screwing. After installation of closet brace, and nailing in door facing boards, wall frames will be done.

Power House clearing: Chris took on a tree, but didn't dare take it down solo.

Clear Trees by Utility Shed: C+K+T+C all had a hand in this. See above.

Reopen GIPPEE: Partially up, despite uncooperative weather, and used by its first 2007 guests. Chris continued implementing improvements afterward. The tent awaits installation for next guests.
Could it be you?

MLA floor cleaning and repair: Wet and muddy, problematic, yurt raisings really ground in a lot o' mess, despite initially careful plans. Cleaning test patch doesn't look promising. Re-sanding highly probable.

South Side Stairs: Dirt removal and preparation begins. This will be very cool when done!

Seal Deck Edges (next to the yurts, cut when it was too cold): On a warm sunny day, Chris finds out that a different brush is needed to apply the sealer in place.

Stain and Seal Deck Perimeter Cuts: finished!

FAA: Noisy and noxious low flying planes continue as a hassle. Chris is prompted to get started on this task after similar air traffic experience: sees, hears and feels his first example of what Cass has meant by "low-flying military jet", and understands firsthand why these are used to strike fear in the enemy. Holy Moly!

Floor/wood spotting problem: Investigations point to this being a metal-wood reaction.

Mold kit/test at Poocham: Probably should have done this ages ago, to find out names of nasty molds. 'Twas ordered at end of month.

Snow Removal and Shoveling: continued, obviously. Maybe there won't be any of this next month?

Some other tasks, continued in April: Bracing Yurt Platforms, Materials Transport, Site Cleanup, Citriclean Drip Edge, Diatomaceous Earth, Split and Stack Firewood, Woodstove Maintenance, Determine Tasks Cass Can Do During Week Alone, Test on Safety: Materials and Tools

On April Twenty-Ninth
C+C Declare:
"Winter Is Over!"

The last lingering snow pile is dissolved.
The anti-freezing trickle into the sink is turned off.

And now, (after repeated crashes and recoveries) the April summary is finally over too!

  • Snow on ground. Snowing and sleeting all day long. AM forecast calling for 5-10inches as a Winter Storm Warning. Hail midmorning.
  • Cass zero phone signal all day. ZERO. Usually can get the occassional glimpse of signal. But no signal at all. Very disconcerting. Eventually at around 9:30PM the neighbor yelled up (presumably hiking up close but hopefully not too close) and Cassandra

310.01 Keep deck clear

  • Snowing/precipitating/icing too much to bother actually shoveling. But, did shovel a path to front of deck to see if would get a phone signal there. (Nope) Also got snow out of awnings. And made a heart... Maybe Chris will somehow know Cass is ok...
  • Time: 0.25hr

320.20 Investigate problem and how to fix

  • It really seems that the spotting is a metal-wood reaction, somehow. C+C not sure. Cass tried sanding a little bit in the closet area. Not sure how deep goes, but didn't sand too far. Walked thru 30', and it does seem to be there also, tho not as prev
