Yucky Incessant Precipitation; "Please End!" Exclaimed!

Muddy And Yucky: Yurtlings Agonize Mightily

Messy, muddy, misty, moist: the month's rains were a major malediction, adversely affecting advances at YIPPEE-land! With only a few rain-free days, May was wet, wet, wet! Reminiscent of October, May's rains often came down heavily, persisted for days on end, and caused extensive flooding throughout the region. Thankfully, the bridge crossing Baker Brook held. Since YIPPEE-land and the Poocham rental house are both located on higher ground, neither was flooded. But, the construction site... Well, actually, the construction site didn't get flooded either. With steep terrain, having the land end up downhill is more the concern; especially as last year's excavation work had been finished too late to seed. Cassandra's ditch and erosion control work was put to the test before fully finished. A few banks experienced some washout and a couple areas will need to be reseeded. Otherwise, her work saved the sites and pipeline area from washout. C+C often listened nervously to what sounded like a raging river as the rains pounded saturated land and water rushed downhill.

Incessant rains mean soggy ground and frustration to C+C, who need to finish the footings before going much further on their buildings. Equipment rental plans were rescheduled once due to heavy rains. The next weekend, Chris proceeded despite a wet forecast. Rain was not overly heavy, but the intended boon from use of high powered auger and cement mixer did not happen. He and Jeremiah encountered assorted troubles and the disappointing progress led C+C to plan for finishing the footing work by hand.

Progress was also inhibited by major flight delays. Getting Chris to Houston and back for work wasn't easy, and took over 12hrs, each way, in the best of conditions. In May, return trips took even longer with Chris arriving home very early Fridays mornings, and once, late on Friday night. With only a few hours sleep after Chris got home, C+C found it difficult to adhere to their construction schedule.

The rains, for reasons unknown to C+C, made Cassandra's phone signal worse; it was nonexistent most of the month. Often, when calls did go through, the voice quality was terrible. Fortunately, data calls don't require a strong signal and Cassandra continued sending phone-cam pics to Chris.

Moose Attack, Yonder!

Moose are not attacking sort of creatures. But having a moose wander through land that has been recently dug, graded, seeded, and rained incessesantly upon, does feel rather attack-like. The imprints left by this moose were deep and larger than Cassandra's foot. The embankments destroyed by this moose were eventually fixed and reseeded, once the rains let up.

Missing Allergies, Yeah!

When it wasn't raining, Cassandra worked a lot on seeding. This involved grass seed, bales of hay and a heap of gratitude. Having been ferociously allergic to grass and hay most her life, Cassandra often felt slightly amazed to be working with grass seed and spreading out hay, with lots of particulates, but no allergic reactions at all. Yeah!

Malevolent! Assault! Yup, Yurtlings Are Miserable!

The Black Fly Assault. It never lets up. Its impeding Cassandra's outdoor work in a major way. The one lotion that actually does prevent them biting is also one that makes Cassandra ill. The bughat does keep the black flies from flying into various head orifices. But, the hat also reduces vision and gets hot. And, nothing seems to stop them being noisy, swarming and making constant attacks. The garlic spray, Mosquito Barrier, is apparently only good on skeeters, and not black flies. Aaaarrrrrgh!

Medical Afternoon, Yowch!

Early in May, on one of the only gorgeous days, with crisp air and brilliantly blue sky, Chris hit his head. The bloody gash resulted in a trip to the neighbors', a trip to the local ER, stitches and a huge "D'oh!" from Chris for missing out on a day without rain to do sitework.

Materials Away, Yikes!

The landlord requested a house inspection since he hadn't been there in four years. Yikes! After C+C panicked a little, they set about making plans for undoing all their construction and MCS related alterations. The flooring boards, plywood, deck boards and yurts would have originally been transported over to the construction site as needed, but now would be taken over after completion of footing work. Originally, C+C planned to do the Poocham cleanup after completing construction, before giving notice: all the accomodations for the staining and sealing work, and for Cassandra's safety, would be removed and a thorough cleaning done. But now, Yikes! C+C were totally unprepared for this, and any time spent doing that work now was time not spent on construction. At least Cassandra was no longer going back to Poocham; without those accomodations, she definitely cannot go back. Although Chris hated spending days at Poocham, Yuck!, a few rainy days were put to good use by starting this house revamping task.

Man Acts Yokel...

Well, OK, true yokel might be taking a dip in the crik. But, Chris did experience his first shower in the little yurt: standing in a 2ft square metal bin under gravity fed, woodstove-heated water. With the return of full-fledged construction in May, Chris joined Cassandra in onsite showering fun. Yeehaw!

Muscle Alleviation, Yes!

Chris' muscles are much happier now that the water filtration is operational. The 5-gallon water jugs were decommissioned; filling them is off the Poocham task list, and Chris can stop lugging them up the steep driveway!

May-be it'll be sunny someday...
May-be footings will be done sometime...
May... June be better!

  • The merits of keeping one's clothes on in the woods:
  • If clothes are worn, there's less chance a tick can find skin and dig in. On the other hand, if one gets on, say, the sweatshirt and is flung off, the next half hour of life will be spent meticulously (and joylessly, no doubt) inspecting oneself and on
  • Prior to The Tick Ruins My Afternoon Episode, a path to the boiler n MLA got created. Many large tree remains cleared by hand and the awesome power of... well, Cass! There's only one limb in need of an axe.
